Janet Thomas began working with young clarinet students in Florida after moving to Gainesville with her family during the summer of 1998.  She worked as a woodwind clinician and clarinet sectional instructor with several Gainesville, Florida area band programs.  Students from Mrs. Thomas' Gainesville studio were selected for Florida All-State Bands and Orchestras forty-three times, including five First Chair (Principal) appointments and four placements in All-State Orchestras.

During 2008, Mrs. Thomas relocated to Jacksonville, Florida where she has had similar results with clarinet students from the Duval County, Nassau County, and St. John's County area.

Mrs. Thomas strives to instill a love for music and an enthusiasm for the clarinet while tailoring her clarinet curriculum (at all levels) to ensure that students are successful both individually and in their school band programs. Her private lesson curriculum includes coaching for honor band and all-state band auditions, camp auditions, college auditions, and Solo and Ensemble performances.

In her private clarinet lessons and clarinet master classes, Mrs. Thomas focuses on fundamental skills including air support, tone production, tuning and intonation, technique, articulation, style, and musicianship. Clarinet choir rehearsals and clarinet sectionals at area schools are geared to improve the quality of the clarinet section within the school wind band. During these sessions, ensemble performance skills including precision, intonation, balance, blend, style, and musicianship are emphasized. Selected clarinet choir repertoire includes a wide range of musical styles.

Students from Mrs. Thomas' clarinet studio have continued their musical studies at the following institutions:  Eastman School of Music, University of Miami Frost School of Music, University of Florida, Florida State University, the University of North Florida, and others.  Many of these students were awarded significant financial aid based on successful scholarship auditions.

Mrs. Thomas holds a current Florida Professional Teaching Certificate for Music K-12 and ESOL.  She is a member and certified woodwind adjudicator for the Florida Bandmasters Association.  She is also a member of the Florida Music Education Association (FMEA) and the National Association for Music Education (NAfME).  Mrs. Thomas is an active Solo and Ensemble adjudicator at the FBA District Level, and has adjudicated FBA State level events in 2007, 2010, 2011, and 2017.

Mrs. Thomas has music teaching experience at all levels, from Kindergarten and Elementary Grades, Middle and High School, and College. She has taught in the Montgomery County Public Schools (Montgomery, AL) and Duval County Public Schools (Jacksonville, FL).  From 2004-2008 she was Adjunct Professor of Music at Santa Fe College in Gainesville, FL where she taught Music Fundamentals and Woodwinds.  Mrs. Thomas worked at Douglas Anderson School of the Arts (DASOTA) in Jacksonville, FL, teaching Clarinet and Woodwinds (2007-2017) and Music Theory (2008-2010).

Mrs. Thomas teaches music full time for Duval County Public Schools while continuing her work as a private clarinet instructor and teaching group sectionals at Jacksonville area middle and high schools.
